Bilo: background and attribution
Pieter van Rosmalen’s exploration of a low-contrast sans interpretation of Bodoni began in 2014 and led to Bilo, according to Bold Monday. The project retained an interest in the shape of Bodoni’s heavy lowercase o while developing a separate, deliberately unconventional grotesque.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Look for oblong curves and the changing proportions from lighter to heavier resources. Its steep italics and alternate a forms deserve comparison in the original specimen. These are drawn design choices rather than a uniform slant applied by the browser.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try an identity heading and short body copy at lighter and bolder settings. DM Sans and Manrope provide independent sans-serif comparisons. Inspect the o, e, a and capital R in the actual phrase to judge the family’s character.
For independent comparisons, try DM Sans and Manrope. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
