Compare representative cells
Begin with a small range containing long labels, dates, negative values, decimals and identifiers used in the workbook. Compare font candidates at the intended working size without changing the data. Inspect similar characters and crowded headings. A family that looks attractive in a title can be awkward in a dense table, so make the decision in cells rather than from an isolated alphabet specimen.
Resolve display formats before blaming the font
Microsoft documents that number formats change displayed appearance while preserving the values used in calculations. Currency, percentage, date and text formats have different jobs. Accounting format aligns currency symbols and decimal points in a column. If values look inconsistent, review the number format first. A new font cannot correct a percentage interpreted incorrectly or recover an identifier whose original input was not preserved.
Give the selected type enough space
Microsoft explains that Normal-view column widths use a character-based unit related to the default font, while row heights use points. After a typography change, review the actual cell boundaries and use an appropriate width or AutoFit where helpful. Inspect wrapped headings and multi-line notes as well as numeric columns. Avoid solving every overflow by shrinking text until the worksheet becomes difficult to read.
Review the intended output
A workbook used on screen and a printed report need separate layout checks. Inspect the print preview for scaling, clipped headers and rows made unexpectedly tall by wrapping. Keep a restrained hierarchy for titles, column labels and data, and preserve editable values. The Excel default font guide explains how to change that setting; this guide concerns selecting typography and diagnosing the surrounding presentation choices.
Your questions, answered.
Is changing the font the same as changing number format?
No. Number formatting controls how values appear, while font formatting controls the letter and numeral design.
Why can a new font require different column widths?
Different fonts have different character dimensions. Review the rendered worksheet after changing typography.
