Bespoke Font: Write a Commission Brief and Evaluate the First Test Word

01

Decide whether the project needs a new family

The Indian Type Foundry’s custom-font explanation distinguishes modifying an existing retail design, making language versions and creating an entirely new family. Start your brief by identifying which problem you actually need solved. A distinctive logo alone may need lettering rather than a complete alphabet; a product interface may require a reproducible family across many strings. List the existing font’s specific limitation before requesting a replacement: a missing script, an unsuitable width or an identity requirement. Avoid a brief consisting only of mood adjectives such as modern and friendly.

02

Supply a test word and the strings the design must handle

In his first-person commissioning process, Anders Wikström describes beginning with a test word and refining trial fonts in the environment where they will be used. Prepare your brand name, a difficult short heading, numbers, punctuation and approved multilingual examples before the first review. Include a realistic long name rather than only a convenient short sample. State the intended applications and output sizes, and separate required styles from possible later additions. In an early comparison, keep the wording and layout fixed so comments identify a specific letter, spacing pair or missing behavior.

03

Turn review comments into a concrete delivery brief

Give each round a short record: specimen version, application, exact input string, observed issue and desired outcome. Ask how the proposed deliverables address your required scripts, styles and formats, and agree how updates and any requested exclusivity will be handled in the project terms. Do not assume a commissioned font automatically includes every format, language or future extension. Keep the working brief distinct from a general designer-credit list or a font-editor tutorial. The homepage’s decorative text transformations replace Unicode characters; a bespoke font project develops reusable glyph drawings and behavior for the characters your text actually contains.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Must a bespoke font always be designed entirely from scratch?

No. ITF describes custom work that can include modifying a retail family or making a language version as well as creating a new design.

What should I send before reviewing the first font trial?

Provide representative real strings, required languages, applications, sizes and layout constraints. Use those same materials to make feedback reproducible.
