Bell Centennial: background and attribution
Bell Centennial is Matthew Carter’s family developed for Bell’s telephone-directory work in the 1970s. The publisher distinguishes functional resources such as Address, Name and Number, Sub-Caption and Bold Listing. It is a separate project from Chauncey Griffith’s earlier Bell Gothic, even though both belong to directory-printing history.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Compare the role-specific resources instead of treating them as four ordinary weights with interchangeable spacing. Inspect letters and figures in a complete name-and-number line. Directory origins explain the design problem, but do not prove readability at every modern size or output condition.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Prepare a compact contact list with real names, addresses and numbers. Compare line spacing and alignment at the final output size. If the page needs a prominent heading as well, evaluate that separately rather than enlarging a small-listing resource and assuming it has the same visual effect.
For independent comparisons, try Roboto Condensed and Source Sans 3. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
