Bebas Kai: background and attribution
Ryoichi Tsunekawa released Bebas Kai in 2014 as a derivative of the original 2005 Bebas design. The creator records its move to open source in 2018 under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. It is a separately named project alongside Bebas Neue and the later commercial Bebas Neue Pro.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The creator describes Bebas Kai as a display face for headings, captions and titles. Its own files and source are available through the linked project. Do not transfer the lowercase, italic or style-count claims of a different Bebas branch to this release.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a short title with a narrow caption. Inspect figures and punctuation in the original specimen and choose the actual supplied style. Keep a record of the family name so another editor does not accidentally substitute a different Bebas release.
For independent comparisons, try Bebas Neue and Antonio. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.

Use Dharma Type to try the original and investigate the files, styles and terms for your intended workflow. This site does not distribute or serve Bebas Kai font software.
The editable alternatives here have their own source profiles and included licenses. For the difference between a font file and copied characters, read Unicode text versus fonts.
