Atlas: background and attribution

Susana Carvalho and Kai Bernau of Atelier Carvalho Bernau designed Atlas Grotesk with Christian Schwartz, released in 2012. Commercial Type connects the project with Munich Re’s need for a compact corporate sans-serif and with the European grotesque tradition. Atlas Typewriter grew from the designers’ interest in applying a monospaced rhythm to related forms.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Atlas Grotesk emphasizes economical proportions for sustained text and data. Atlas Typewriter gives related letterforms fixed-width constraints and a different texture. The proportional and monospaced branches should be compared as distinct resources, especially when line lengths or aligned columns are important.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Set a report heading, a paragraph and a small data table. Compare the Grotesk and Typewriter branches at the same approximate visual size, then inspect line breaks and aligned figures. Keep the actual edition and style documented when handing the layout to another person.

For independent comparisons, try Inter and Roboto Mono. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
