Astoria: background and attribution

Alan Meeks designed Astoria as a text family influenced by Gill, particularly in its middle weights. His description emphasizes a small upper-left serif that places the design between a conventional roman serif and a sans serif. That hybrid detail is a useful way to understand the family's character without forcing it into an overly rigid category.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The small serif detail should be inspected in the actual specimen, especially at reading sizes. Astoria Classic is a separate related branch: Meeks describes it as retaining the characteristic detail but introducing vertical stress and a different italic approach. A similar family name does not establish that both branches will match in an existing layout.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a paragraph at its intended size before testing a heading. Inspect the small serif details, punctuation and the balance between upright and italic text. When matching a previous document, establish whether it uses Astoria or Astoria Classic before judging line breaks or selecting replacements.

For independent comparisons, try Alegreya Sans and Source Sans 3. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Is Astoria a serif or sans serif?

Meeks emphasizes its small upper-left serif and describes it as sitting between the two categories. Inspect the actual letters rather than relying only on a category label.

Is Astoria Classic identical to Astoria?

No. The designer describes Classic as a related branch with vertical stress and a different italic treatment, while retaining the characteristic small serif detail.

Was Astoria designed only for headlines?

The designer explicitly describes it as a text face that can also serve in headlines. Compare real paragraphs at the final reading size.
