The designer’s system changes letters according to position
Device’s original Armstrong description credits Rian Hughes and documents a geometric linking script. OpenType behavior substitutes specially designed beginning and ending forms, with optional swash alternates. The Adobe family description independently presents the same Device family as a geometric script with linking alternates and swash capitals. A separate Fontkong Armstrong identifies a different creator and styles; do not combine its resources with Hughes’s design. Confirm the creator before assuming an Armstrong file supplies these linking behaviors.
Create a start-and-end proof using the actual names
Set the intended heading and two realistic replacement names. Include a single-word version and a two-word version with the approved spacing. In the licensed original, inspect the first and last letters of each complete word before judging isolated characters. Keep a note of which OpenType settings are active. If a form changes after text is edited, compare it with the documented positional behavior before manually replacing glyphs. Preserve the complete word in the proof so a later editor can understand the context that produced its appearance.
Check swash capitals against the surrounding composition
Make a plain-capital proof and a swash-capital proof of the same heading. Compare the available space to the left, above and below the line, including the intended image crop or neighboring label. A more decorative opening does not need a matching flourish everywhere else. Choose the version that establishes the right emphasis without requiring extra empty space the final format cannot provide. Keep the venue, date or secondary explanation in a separate role so its wording is not constrained by the decorative initial.
Recheck word boundaries after a line break or export
Place the heading in both the widest and narrowest required format. Inspect the resulting word endings, line starts and joins after a change in line arrangement. Save the editable original and an approved visual proof together; if an exported result differs, investigate its text rendering and feature settings rather than assuming the original forms were wrong. Compare Sacramento, Allura and Pacifico as independent scripts, not Armstrong previews. Follow Device’s source to examine the original and investigate its files and usage terms.
Your questions, answered.
Does every Armstrong font have Rian Hughes’s linking alternates?
No. A Fontkong namesake is a separate product. Keep the creator and exact family identity attached to your source and selected files.
Why should I proof complete words instead of only individual letters?
This Device design uses documented beginning and ending substitutions. A letter’s position and surrounding text are therefore relevant to the result you need to approve.
