Apotek: background and attribution
Dyana Weissman developed Apotek for her foundry Kerns & Cairns. Type Network’s launch account traces its starting point to medicine bottles she encountered in a Norwegian museum during a 2006 trip. Their robust, square lettering suggested a sans serif she wanted to explore further. The resulting family grew from that particular observation into a carefully organized system, rather than a generic recreation of pharmaceutical packaging.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Apotek combines rounded outer contours with more angular internal counters. Type Network describes a low-contrast, constructed appearance tempered by deliberate exceptions to the system. Its widths can be adjusted independently of stroke weight, allowing proportions and darkness to be considered separately. Narrower settings reduce internal white space, so an apparently similar weight can feel darker when compressed. That relationship is central to comparing the family’s different proportions.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Use a mock exhibition label with an object name, year and two sentences of description. First compare two widths without changing the weight; then adjust weight only if the darker texture needs correction. Keep measurements, captions and the main heading visibly distinct. In a compact mobile version, shorten the text or introduce a line break before selecting an extremely narrow proportion simply to fit everything.
For independent comparisons, try Barlow and Rajdhani. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
