Apercu: background and attribution
Aperçu is Colophon Foundry’s family, generally searched without its accent as Apercu. The publisher dates initial drawing to December 2009 and the release to August 2010. Its account describes combining references to Johnston, Gill Sans, Neuzeit and Franklin Gothic rather than copying a single historical model.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Compare a heading and reading paragraph to evaluate how those influences coexist in a contemporary family. Check the particular edition and script coverage you need. A retailer listing date is different from the original family release; the later date should not replace the publisher’s design history.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Prepare a page with a title, caption and short body passage, then compare weight and italic emphasis at a consistent size. Preserve a clear hierarchy through spacing and scale. If switching to an independent alternative, recheck line breaks rather than expecting identical widths.
For independent comparisons, try Source Sans 3 and Open Sans. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
