A site skin changes your reading environment
AO3’s official FAQ explains that skins are CSS stylesheets and distinguishes site skins from work skins. A site skin changes the interface for the signed-in reader using it. A work skin affects an individual work and can be disabled by readers. This distinction matters before you change typography: decide whether you want a personal reading preference or an authored presentation.
Choose a font available to the reader
The FAQ says font families are allowed but the font must be installed on the reader’s system. It also says links to webfonts, such as Google Fonts, are stripped. Specify fallback families so a missing preferred font does not leave your intended reading style entirely dependent on one installation. A font visible in a design preview here is not automatically available inside AO3.
Apply a deliberate reading choice
Use the official skin instructions to create or select a skin and apply it to the intended context. Begin with the font family and a comfortable reading size. Change line spacing and width only as needed, judging a complete paragraph with punctuation and emphasis. Keep the changes small enough that you can tell which one improves your reading experience.
Keep the story readable without decoration
AO3 states that downloaded works do not retain their work skin. Keep essential meaning in the words rather than relying on a special font to distinguish crucial information. For font selection outside AO3, use the reading-font guide and monospaced comparison. Those examples support visual exploration; your AO3 result still depends on the chosen skin and available local fonts.
