Amplitude: background and attribution

Amplitude is Christian Schwartz’s sans serif family, first released through Font Bureau in 2003. The current publisher describes renovation work with Benjamin Tuttle in 2025, including italics across the styles. Keep the original release and the later update distinct when describing its history.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The design draws on agate typography, where shapes compensate for ink spread in difficult small-print conditions. Its deep angled cuts also create a recognizable surface at display sizes. Compare those details at both small and large sizes rather than treating them only as decoration.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Prepare a dense numeric listing, a reading paragraph and one large headline. Compare the effect of the cut-ins at each size. For printing, assess the final output rather than assuming that a sharp enlarged screen specimen predicts the appearance of small inked text.

For independent comparisons, try Roboto and Source Sans 3. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
