Read the symbol’s construction in the actual family
In Hoefler&Co.’s original ampersand discussion, the foundry traces the sign to a written contraction of Latin et and explains the choices behind its own designs. Its examples distinguish clearly visible e–t constructions from forms that only suggest that origin. This is why a roman and italic ampersand can differ substantially within one family. Compare both in the actual phrase rather than assuming that an italic ampersand is simply the roman drawing tilted.
Distinguish an ampersand collection from a full alphabet
In his February 2010 first-person FontAid IV account, contributor Scott Boms documents the collaborative Coming Together font and his Anchor contribution. He describes an OpenType collection with more than 400 glyphs, created around ampersands to support Haiti earthquake relief through Doctors Without Borders. Treat that account as project history, not a current price or availability offer. A collection centered on one symbol should not be assumed to supply the ordinary letters needed for an entire business name.
Proof the joining symbol as part of the complete name
Set an original pair such as Maya & Alex, then compare the symbol at the same size in EB Garamond, Lora and Playfair Display. These are independent family comparisons, not the Coming Together collection. Judge apparent weight, height and the gaps beside the symbol before changing its size. Keep a control with the words and symbol in one family before trying a deliberate mixed-family version. The homepage’s copyable text styles change Unicode characters; they do not preserve the selected font’s ampersand drawing when pasted into an application using another font.
Your questions, answered.
Does every ampersand font contain a full alphabet?
Not necessarily. A specialist symbol collection and a full text family are different resources; inspect the actual glyph inventory.
Should I judge an ampersand only by its isolated shape?
Compare it with the complete names or words. Its apparent weight, height and adjacent spacing affect the whole line.
