Start with a documented Ethiopic typeface
SIL’s Abyssinica design account connects its letterforms with Ethiopic calligraphic traditions and lists a Regular style, without a bold or italic companion. Its specimen includes Amharic text. This provides one specifically documented resource for comparison, rather than a claim that every Amharic document must use the same family. Keep the actual source text and its punctuation intact when evaluating a different font.
A font does not supply the keyboard
SIL explains that Abyssinica does not include keyboard software and points to operating-system input methods and separate Ethiopic keyboards. Install or select the appropriate input method for the language before judging the output. Changing a font alone cannot turn incorrectly entered text into the intended wording. Record the keyboard and application as well as the font when helping another person reproduce a document.
Distinguish character encoding from appearance
The project’s resources distinguish Unicode text from older custom-encoded data, which may require conversion or re-entry. Its feature documentation also describes OpenType support for combining marks and character variants. Preserve a copy before converting legacy text and compare the resulting words with the original document. A page that looks readable in one old font is not proof that its underlying characters will travel correctly to another system.
Review the full reading and export workflow
Use a complete passage with headings, punctuation and the names required by the project. Compare the final document in the application and exported format rather than a large isolated alphabet alone. The official project includes its license and webfont resources; follow those materials for the selected release. The Unicode guide explains the character/font distinction and the font file guide covers resource formats.
Your questions, answered.
Does installing an Amharic font install an input method?
Not automatically. SIL explicitly separates its font from keyboard software and lists separate input options.
Does Abyssinica SIL offer a bold companion in the documented release?
Its design page lists Regular and says no bold or italic version is available or planned.
