American Scribe: background and attribution

Brian Willson designed American Scribe in 2003 from the handwriting associated with the engrossed Declaration of Independence. The source distinguishes Thomas Jefferson, who authored the text, from Timothy Matlack, whose penmanship informed this typeface. That distinction matters when describing the font’s historical reference.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The family includes ligatures, contextual and standard alternates, and lining and oldstyle figures. These features can vary repeated letter combinations while retaining a typeset text workflow. The creator explicitly describes American Scribe as commercial font software rather than a free historical download.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a commemorative invitation and a short quotation with proper attribution. Inspect joined sequences, punctuation and the line endings at final size. A historical handwriting reference does not make a newly typeset document an authentic historical facsimile.

For independent comparisons, try Pinyon Script and Great Vibes. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
