Alfarn: background and attribution
Céline Hurka developed Alfarn from a small set of letters in Alfred Arndt’s 1923 bakery poster. Her project account distinguishes the 2018 interpretation from the 2022 work that added lowercase and further punctuation choices; the modern font is a considered reconstruction rather than an untouched historical alphabet.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The creator describes three uppercase width alternates per letter and separate punctuation treatments. Check the edition and feature support when selecting those variants. A historical reference does not mean every lowercase form appeared in the original poster.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a short geometric display heading with mixed-case text. Righteous and Josefin Sans offer independent comparisons. Test the actual width choices in supporting software rather than stretching a single default glyph.
For independent comparisons, try Righteous and Josefin Sans. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
