Albertus Nova: background and attribution
Toshi Omagari developed Albertus Nova for Monotype's 2017 Berthold Wolpe Collection. His account describes archival research into Wolpe's original Albertus and its development from capitals into a broader family. Nova responds to limitations of earlier resources while preserving the design's inscriptional character.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Omagari describes revised letter proportions and a more consistent balance between capitals and lowercase. The project restored alternate forms, added small capitals and expanded the family with Greek, Cyrillic and additional weights. Those changes distinguish Nova from an older Albertus installation rather than merely renaming the same files.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a heading, a lowercase line and a small-cap title in the actual Nova specimen. Check the chosen alternatives and language coverage when revisiting older artwork. The Albertus guide explains the earlier family; keep the two editions identified when comparing line breaks and weight.
For independent comparisons, try Cinzel and Marcellus. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.

Your questions, answered.
Who created Albertus Nova?
Toshi Omagari developed the 2017 revival for Monotype's Berthold Wolpe Collection, drawing on the earlier Albertus design.
Is Albertus Nova identical to Albertus?
No. Omagari describes revised proportions and spacing balance, restored alternates, small capitals, expanded scripts and more weights.
Can I assume an older Albertus file contains Nova's additions?
No. Inspect the edition, character set and actual resources before replacing or extending an existing layout.
