Change Fonts and Text Size in Acrobat PDFs

Choose the right control, understand its scope and keep your text editable.

Editing existing PDF text differs from changing a form field or enlarging the viewing zoom. This guide covers Acrobat’s document-text editing controls and the font resources needed for that work.

01

Select editable document text

Open the PDF in Acrobat and choose Edit. Select the text, then use the Format Text controls for its font, size or other available formatting.

Resizing a text box and changing the font size are different operations. Compare the text after reflow within its box.

02

Check font availability

Adobe documents limits when the original family is not installed. An embedded font alone may allow only restricted changes, such as size or color, rather than a complete text revision in that same face.

Make the appropriate font resource available before assuming a replacement preserves the document’s design.

03

Review the surrounding page

Compare alignment, line wrapping and neighboring objects after a text change. A PDF is not necessarily a flowing word-processing document, so one altered paragraph may not move the rest of the page as expected.

If you control the original authoring file, consider making substantial typography changes there and regenerating the PDF.

04

Keep formats and sources clear

Read font file types to distinguish the typeface resource from the PDF that displays it. For family background, use the font library.

A font visible in an image or fixed page is not automatically available as an editable resource in every app.

05

Add text and distinguish its default from editing fallback

Adobe documents adding PDF text with fonts installed on the system. In Acrobat, choose Edit, then Text under Add Content, and draw a text block. To choose a default for new text, open Preferences > Content Editing and set Default font for Add Text and Font Size. Windows reaches Preferences through Menu; macOS uses Acrobat > Preferences. Fallback font for Editing is a separate setting for unavailable original fonts. A default choice does not identify the original PDF typeface or preserve its exact spacing automatically. Compare the surrounding text and line breaks after adding a passage.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Is viewing zoom the same as editing font size?

No. Zoom changes the view; text editing changes the document’s content formatting.

Can I fully revise text with any embedded font?

Adobe documents restrictions when the font is not installed. Check the actual resource and editing support.

Does this guide cover fillable-form field properties?

No. It focuses on document text. Form-field appearance is a separate authoring task.
