Urbanist: design background and attribution

Corey Hu launched Urbanist in 2020 as a geometric sans informed by Modernist design. Elementary shapes and low stroke contrast underpin its deliberately neutral character.

The Google Fonts catalog credits Corey Hu. Read the official project description for the source account. The catalog lists this family as added on 2021-06-02; that is a directory date, not proof of when the design was first created.

02

Styles, weights, and character coverage

The reviewed catalog lists 18 listed styles for Urbanist, with weight values 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900. Italic styles are included in that listing. The catalog also lists variable axes wght. This preview selects named styles; it does not expose every variable-axis setting.

Listed script subsets are latin, latin-ext. Subset names describe catalog coverage, not a guarantee that every language or specialist character is supported. Enter the exact names, punctuation, or script you need and check the result in your final application.

Where to try Urbanist

Compare a product heading with a short interface paragraph. Use weight changes to establish hierarchy without crowding the geometric letterforms.

For a related comparison, inspect Chakra Petch and Teko. These are same-category candidates for comparison, not an assertion that their spacing or design is interchangeable. Use the same sample phrase and output size so the comparison tests the layout rather than different words.

04

Free download, web use, and license

The verified repository includes Urbanist under SIL Open Font License 1.1. Use the official Google Fonts page to obtain the family and read the included license for the specific distribution. This site does not claim that a font with a similar name or a third-party download has the same license.

The specimen can copy a stylesheet request and CSS declaration for web use, or export a PNG of your sample. Ordinary clipboard text does not preserve a font family. For a clear comparison with decorative characters, read Unicode text versus real fonts. Install the font in the app that creates your final layout when you need editable text with these letterforms.
